Valley Stream Parking Garage

New Construction

Location: Valley Stream, NY

Project Specifications:

  • Total Square Footage: 360,000

Aurora Contractors was the General Contractor for the 360,000 square foot, 4-level above-grade parking garage at the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, NY. The parking garage adjoins an existing active mall, and is located less than 10 feet away from the fire lane of the Macy’s department store, as well as the underground delivery tunnel that accesses the loading docks.

With such a close proximity to the mall, and large volume of pedestrian and car traffic nearby, Aurora had to implement several safety plans and safeguards to keep the site safe. To that end, Aurora held additional weekly meetings with mall security, mall management, as well as the Town of Hempstead Building Department and the Fire Marshal, to ensure construction was safe as well as on schedule. The site is located in a high water table zone, and had to be constantly dewatered during construction, due to the intensive excavation required to install the expansive footing and foundations; a leeching field was also installed to control the water. The other challenge for this project was building in close proximity of the active mall and parking lots. It was imperative that Aurora’s work did not interfere with the operations of the existing mall. The parking garage is surrounded on all sides by active public areas that had to remain accessible to the public at all times. Aurora had to coordinate construction of the exterior of the garage and all deliveries during off hours to accomplish this.
